every 4th Sunday, your child is invited to join me and listen to the Sunday Urban Scene radio show. They will hear from a local children's book author! But that's not all! I want your super reader to be a part of the show! Click on the Let's Read Together page, during the show, and your child can read (selected pages of the book) with me, the week's featured author and other kids from across the Midlands! Its a great way to wrap-up the weekend and get ready to start another school week!
So, Why Are We Doing This?
Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. Also, starting in 2018, schools in South Carolina, by law, must hold back any student who fails to demonstrate reading proficiency at the end of the third grade. According to a 2018 article in the Post and Courier newspaper, the third-grade retention policy is a component of South Carolina’s 2014 Read to Succeed Act. The act was proposed by lawmakers as a remedy to the state’s perennially poor literacy results.
As a parent, I truly see how children absorb everything we give, tell or show them. Years ago, I was blown away when I heard my then 1-year old making the phonetic sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet. I have enjoyed watching him, and now his younger brother, develop into a strong, early readers! I want that for every child!
The fourth Sunday Literacy Show is my small way to "come alongside" parents and teachers to help motivate children to learn and love to read! I hope you and your little super reader(s) will join us, every 4th Sunday!
