Preserving African American History; Starting Conversations for a Better Future
Two historical markers celebrating African-American contribution and achievement in healthcare were recently unveiled in Columbia. During the April 14th Sunday Urban Scene show, guests Catherine Fleming Bruce, Dr. Kari Claudia Allen and Dr. Bernie Gallman discuss how preserving this history is also creating pathways to dialogue on the impact of racial segregation on healthcare and current measures needed to provide quality healthcare all people.
Allen University Presdient Dr. Ernest McNealy said in 18 months they hope the building will be operational again. The four-year, private Liberal arts Historically Black College has embarked on a $10 million dollar renovation of the hospital, which will include an annex to honor the nine victims of the 2015 Mother Emanuel Massacre.
